What the Flagship Prenatal Carrier Panel Checks

Understand the three conditions in the standard prenatal carrier screening panel: spinal muscular atrophy, fragile X syndrome, and cystic fibrosis.

The flagship prenatal carrier screening panel checks for three of the most common serious genetic conditions: spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), fragile X syndrome, and cystic fibrosis (CF). These conditions are inherited in different ways and have different symptoms and treatment options.

Spinal muscular atrophy is caused by changes in the SMN1 gene. It affects muscle strength and movement. Severity varies; some forms appear in infancy and can be life-limiting, while others start in adulthood. Newborn screening and treatments such as gene therapy have improved outcomes, but early knowledge helps families prepare.

Fragile X syndrome is caused by changes in the FMR1 gene. It is the most common inherited cause of intellectual disability and autism spectrum disorder. Fragile X carrier screening is especially important because carriers can also have related health issues, including fragile X-associated primary ovarian insufficiency and tremor/ataxia syndrome.

Cystic fibrosis is caused by changes in the CFTR gene. It affects the lungs, digestive system, and other organs, leading to thick mucus buildup. Treatment has improved life expectancy, but CF requires lifelong medical care. Carrier screening identifies parents who carry one CFTR gene change.

Because these three conditions are inherited differently, a negative result for one does not rule out risk for another. A genetic counselor can explain what your specific results mean for family planning.
